Just behind Santenay – clearly visible from our campsite – is the “Montagne des Trois Croix” viewpoint. A well-signposted hiking trail leads from Santenay-Le-Haut up to the 521 m high Mont de Sène.
So instead of getting on the bike, we walked. The climb is easy to accomplish, at least for hikers who are used to Switzerland, and is worth it with many enchanting views. The 360° panoramic view at the top of the summit is simply spectacular: to the east and south the Côte de Beaune and the prestigious wine-growing region of Santenay. On a (very) clear day you could even see Mont-Blanc and, as the board shows, all the way to Switzerland! In the south you can see the Maranges wine-growing region, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Clunisois, dominated by Mont-Saint-Vincent, and in the west the Morvan.
For the way back we took the longer option over the mountain ridge (yellow marked route no. 26) back to Santenay. Also very worthwhile, but you can easily add up to a few hours of hiking.
