Day 6: Fes

ተሓቲሙ: 30.03.2018

Fes is the third largest city in Morocco with around 1 million inhabitants. It is the oldest of the four royal cities in the country (along with Marrakech, Rabat, and Meknes).

The old town of Fes has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981. It is the largest medieval old town in the world, covering an area of 280 hectares.

Blue is considered the symbol of Fes, symbolizing ceramics, along with the green roofs of the sacred buildings.

Today, Fes consists of three parts:

- Old Town / Medina 9th century

- Medieval new town 13th century

- Ville Nouvelle 19th century, during the French Protectorate

The Medina of Fes consists of up to 2000 small labyrinthine alleys. Without a guide or Google Maps (😍), you will definitely get lost in this labyrinth. House by house, you will find small shops, cafes, restaurants, workshops, as well as mosques, madrasas, and small squares. Donkeys and horses are popular means of transport in the winding alleys.

In the Medina, it is bustling, noisy, and chaotic, where you can really find everything. You will meet many different people, some wanting to sell something, others trying to impose themselves as guides, and others simply being helpful. Definitely an experience! ☺️👌
