Kharanaq - a city crumbling to dust

I visited the ancient city of Kharanaq just outside Yazd. It was practically built entirely of clay, then gradually abandoned as more modern houses were built, and now it is literally crumbling to dust.

It was very impressive to walk through these empty houses and apartments, through this oriental maze of narrow alleys, and to trace the past. People had lived here with their tasks, dreams, wishes, worries, and joys. And now nothing but dust. When I touched a wall, the dust literally crumbled into my hands. Some areas are no longer accessible due to the risk of collapse.

This tangible encounter with transience is truly moving. In such places, the age-old question of where we come from, where we are going, and what remains inevitably arises.
A question that has always bothered me, but has rarely been closer to me than when I saw this decaying city.
It was like a monument.
