Day 26 - Exploring Darwin

After a plentiful breakfast at our now regular coffee house chain, we set off to visit the exhibition on the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) and the bombing of Darwin Harbour, which opened six months ago.

The modern exhibition included: two hologram performances, one about the founder of the RFDS and one about a general from World War II; an interactive representation of the bombing by the Japanese, which sent shivers down your spine; three holograms that you could 'question' about various topics; a video of the attack with virtual reality glasses and an airplane where you could sit in the cockpit.

After seeing every corner of the museum at least twice, we strolled along Haden Promenade. A restaurant enticed us with Latin rhythms and we stayed for a short lunch with mocktails.

With full bellies, we walked to the old town to see the houses that had survived the 16 bombings.

Then we made a quick pit stop at the motel to grab our swimsuits in case we wanted to cool off and fresh, non-sweaty clothes to change into. Formula 1-worthy 16 minutes, 25 seconds, and 76 hundredths later, we set off to explore the local Bicentennial Walk. There, we discovered a hidden access to a small lagoon nestled between trees and thickets. Only upon closer observation did we notice the thousands of small crabs scurrying in the sand.

After Hannah was able to tear herself away from the adorable creatures, we continued our journey. Once again drawn by musical sounds and growling stomachs, we discovered a small open-air cinema right by the sea.

After a brief consideration and checking the movie, we bought two tickets for the show. The cinema was a lovingly set up garden, with rows of loungers + cushions to make yourself comfortable, many string lights, a small counter to buy popcorn and drinks, free mosquito repellent oil, and lots of other playful little details.
