June 14, 2021 - Cat at the clinic

On the evening of May 13th, our black and yellow cat Mia came into the caravan. As usual, she started eating. However, she sneezed noticeably often. For this reason, Nick took a closer look: something was stuck in Mia's right nostril. Just to explain - all the grass and stuff growing there is very woody and partly prickly. Something is growing here that looks like the ear of barley... Whatever this thing is called, it's sticking in our shoes and clothes, and now it's stuck in Mia's nose. She kept sneezing, probably trying to get rid of the stuff. Nick and I tried to remove it with tweezers. Besides the fact that the three pieces got shorter with each attempt, it was very difficult to hold her. One would think that two people could hold such a small cat... We called our boss to see if she knew a veterinarian nearby, the horse veterinarian was already gone and comes from Madrid. Here in Spain, it's not easy to find a veterinarian on a Sunday evening after 10:00 PM, especially since the websites are not always up to date. We got a contact from a clinic in Segovia. After Nick made the call, we put the little harness on her and set off. On the way, we were stopped by the police, but they weren't interested in the nervous and shedding cat on my lap. When we arrived at the clinic in Segovia, we were able to show them the cat. The veterinarian was very nice and caring with Mia. She said that she is familiar with these prickles mainly from dogs. They immediately get stuck in everything, have barbs, and break off when you try to remove them. Since Mia had unfortunately eaten, we left her at the clinic overnight so they could remove it under anesthesia in the morning. We were able to pick her up again at noon, she is fit as always and happy to be back. Only when we get in the car, she scurries away and keeps a necessary distance.
