14.8. Copenhagen

ተሓቲሙ: 14.08.2022

This morning we are still lazing around (if you can call it that - Felix is continuing to improve his international communication on the football field, Flo is assembling the Lego sets he acquired with Sammy, Sophie is making bracelets, and Dani is tidying up the motorhome).

Around noon, we secure everything properly (according to the receptionist, anything unsecured here quickly grows legs) and walk for about 10 minutes to the S-Bahn station towards Copenhagen city center. Buying the tickets turns out to be a complicated affair. We accidentally buy three times as many tickets as we need and vow never to complain about Viennese ticket machines again.

After about 20 minutes of deciphering the machine UI, we finally board the train and it takes about the same amount of time to reach Copenhagen Central Station.

There, we take one of the double-decker buses and act like good tourists - we don't want to stand out. We drive through the city and listen to many interesting explanations. We get off at the 'little mermaid' (which is actually a completely unspectacular 'little statue') and walk from Kastellet to Amalienborg Palace and Frederik's Church.

We hop back on the bus and get off at Christiania again. (Christiania is a kind of city within the city where the laws of Denmark unofficially do not apply - see link) We walk through the 'free town' - it feels like being thrown back to the 70s here. There are a lot of people around, a colorful mix of tourists, residents, and young people who really enjoy the 'carefree' atmosphere (judging by the smell).

The kids feel a bit uncomfortable as we pass the sign 'Photos strictly forbidden'. In the alley after that, hashish but also other drugs are offered loudly like at the Hamburg fish market. Entertaining, but admittedly a bit strange.

We resist the eager businessmen and continue walking across the canal bridges to Nyhavn. There is a lot going on here, the Copenhageners enjoy the fantastic Sunday, sunbathe at the docks, and swim in the canal. Many are out on private motorboats.

In the evening, we get back on the train (we are already on a first-name basis with the ticket machine) and arrive exhausted at our rolling shack. Tomorrow we will continue our journey...
