We have been in Siem Reap for 6 days now and will not leave until Monday. It's been nice days here, mostly very calm. We spend a lot of time reading, especially during the hot lunch hours, which we prefer to spend in the air-conditioned hotel room. In the evenings, we walk through the city or along the river, have a drink or two, and eat something. We haven't seen the extensive nightlife yet, as tiredness always sets in beforehand.
The main reason for our long stay here, of course, is the temples of Angkor, and today was our third day visiting there. There are tickets for one, three, or seven days, and we decided on three days. I think you would have to be equipped with a lot more research interest and background knowledge to enjoy seven days. The third day today took us to a more remote temple called 'Banteay Srei' and a river with ancient stone figures worked into its rock bed, where fertility rituals were held. Both were very impressive, especially the Hindu temple, whose 1050-year-old delicate decorations are so finely crafted that it is also called the 'Temple of the Women'. One interpretation is that only women can create such delicate decorations......
All three temple days were wonderful, it is hard to say which temple is the most beautiful, each has its own charm. The heat makes it challenging, but it is worth it.
