Back from Milford Sound, we made a stopover in Queenstown and Wanaka on the way back. We stayed in Wanaka for 'one night'. The night was very short as we wanted to be on Roys Peak for sunrise. We went to bed at 11pm and woke up at 2am to drive to the hiking trail. We started the hike at 3am.
It took us 2 hours to reach the top of the mountain and we had to wait there for about 1 hour for the sunrise.
The early wake-up was more than worth it!
Wanaka before sunrise
The snow-covered mountains
Before sunrise, you could only imagine the great view. But later, you could fully enjoy it!
I have also created a short video for this hike.
It has been one of the best hikes I have done here so far, and it was absolutely the right decision to start the hike at night so that we can be on top for sunrise.
