It was built from 1888-1906 and extensively restored from 2006-2010. 3 architects were necessary to complete the construction. The first Italian unexpectedly died, the second, also Italian, caught his wife in the act with a lover, upon which the lover shot him. A dramatic exit. The third, a Belgian, was apparently not impressed.
The entrance area (photos 5-12) is equipped with a lot of marble and quite pompous.
The Salon Dorado (golden hall) is modeled after the Grand Foyer of the Opera in Paris. Today, concerts are held there, among other events. Photos 13-22.
The main hall (photos 23-26) is impressively large, 32 x 75 x 28 meters high, has 7 levels and about 2500 seats and 500 standing places. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to take a complete photo because a new production of Faust is about to start.
Curiosity: even the widows, who had to mourn for a year, were remembered. They had small lodges right at the bottom near the stage, which were black-grated and had a separate entrance.
In the dome, 7 meters in diameter, with the over a ton heavy chandelier, musicians or singers can take their places to reproduce the "heavenly" sounds of an opera.
