After a freezing cold night at the airport, our plane headed towards Bali at 6 am. 4 hours and some turbulence later, we arrived in Denpasar and took a pretty expensive taxi to Ubud. Our taxi driver seemed to dream of a career in Formula One and we were very relieved that neither we nor various scooter riders were harmed during the one-hour drive. Our first destination was in the center of Bali. The small town of Ubud, known for art, culture, and a lot of yoga, should be our first stop in Indonesia.

We were initially surprised that Bali is so different from everything we had explored in Asia before. Clean, very green, and very religious. Every house has its own Hindu altar and offerings are made several times a day to honor the gods and appease the demons. To our delight, Bali is also a few degrees cooler than Thailand, which is very welcome for us spoiled Germans.

In Ubud, we strolled through the small streets, visited relaxed restaurants and spiritual shops, enjoyed the peace on Ubud's rice field walk, and visited the monkey forest with its cheeky monkey residents.

On the penultimate day, we drove with our scooter to the famous world heritage of the wonderful rice terraces outside of Ubud. Fortunately, we were early enough to avoid the large tourist crowds and even saw a snake slithering through the rice fields in front of us.

The days in Ubud were very relaxed and we would love to come back again. But now it's time to go back to the beloved sea.
