Australia is completely different than expected... First arrived and froze... 26 degrees and wind feels damn cold here, especially after traveling in sunny Indonesia for three months, where it never gets colder than 30 degrees even at night... So I grabbed a sweater and walked to the hostel... Checked in quickly (€30!? as a deposit for the key) and started looking for a room... Super tiny room with almost no space for my backpack... But what did I expect, it's also one of the cheapest hostels in Melbourne. Into the kitchen/lounge area, where I immediately met new people... 18-year-olds who think they're cool because they've been alone in Australia for 2 to 3 months... Turns out, many of them still don't know how to cook rice or make a proper sauce for noodles... It quickly becomes clear that the backpacker life is not for me. It's like student life without studying... The kitchen and the room are always dirty... There's only noodles or rice with pesto or other sauces because everything else is too expensive or I just don't want to cook anything else in the available kitchen... There's always, really always drinking and smoking... Every day, at least one person asks if I want to go partying... People complain about running out of money... And I could go on and on... But since I studied for 4 years, I'm slowly getting annoyed... I want to experience something without having to pinch every dollar, living the Australian dream with working in the morning, surfing in the evening, and having BBQ on the beach... Finding a job is not so easy when you don't have 5 years of experience in a restaurant or café, don't have a hairdressing or cooking education, and don't want to end up as a dishwasher... The waves for surfing are much more consistent and better in other countries... And I don't have the money for BBQ... So after 8 days, I change cities in the hope that it will get better there... And it did get better... Well, at least the waves for surfing got a bit better... The rest remained the same... Australia is beautiful, but it's hard to enjoy it without money... Occasionally, I found people to go on trips to secluded beaches, great viewpoints, or for sightseeing, and those were wonderful days when I was glad to have come to Australia...
