We ended up in Sansibar over New Year's. The five of us set off on December 28th by bus to Dar es Salaam. 11 hours drive, no air conditioning, no toilet, and a more than wild driver. But the landscape was breathtaking and the time passed relatively quickly. In Dar, especially at night, it is much hotter than in Moshi, so the night became quite short. In the morning, we went to the ferry port to take the first ferry. But no luck, it was already full. So two hours later we took the next one. The crossing only took about 2.5 hours, and we arrived in Sansibar in the rain. Our hotel was located about 5 kilometers north of Stone Town. The beach there was not so nice, but the breakfast was amazing.
For the next few days, we really enjoyed ourselves. Boat tour to Prison Island, snorkeling at a sandbank, spice tour, night market in Stone Town, and just exploring the area. We spent New Year's Eve at Kendwa Beach in the north. That's where the biggest party on the island took place. It was too crowded, with bad music. But the setting was beautiful. That's why we didn't spend the evening there directly, but with a few locals and their drums by the bonfire. At 6 in the morning, we took the first bus back to Maruhubi and practically ate up the breakfast buffet.
Of course, the five days went by way too quickly, but the return trip was really good again. We flew with a small propeller plane to Moshi Airport. The pilot read a book and listened to music, and only when we landed twice in the middle of nowhere on a sandy runway, he pressed buttons. That was pretty cool.
