We wake up early and start our journey to Morton NP. We read about the Fitzroy Waterfall here and we want to visit it. Also, the campsites in the NP are not fully booked. In the next big city, we visit the internet and, luckily, we can update the blog again. I feel like the blog was closed over the weekend. 😊
The Visitor Centre is very helpful. There is no internet in the NP, but the two very friendly young men help us and book a spot in Bundanoon. It is not common, but one of them is a German Australian and he enjoyed talking to us. We visit the waterfall and are amazed that a small river on the plateau has created such a huge canyon over millions of years. The river is said to have large crayfish (12 cm long) and the platypus (here only 30-45 cm long and 1-1.5 kg), as well as the echidna, in the area. We take a short walk along the rim, which is what the upper edge of the canyon is called in the English-speaking world, and continue on to our campground. There are several hiking trails and car-accessible paths here. We hike to an old coal mine that was closed in 1910 due to poor coal quality and low yield. 310 steps down to the entrance of the mine and 310 steps back up. Today's hiking goals achieved.
The small campground is busy, people are chatting everywhere, and the camp kitchen is bustling. It's good that we brought everything we need.
PS: There is a hot shower here, a real treat after 2 days in the other NPs.
