On our first free weekend, we decided to drive to Taupo and explore the city. Taupo is about 2 hours away from our home. On Saturday morning, we set off around 10am. We actually wanted to leave much earlier, but once again we couldn't get out of bed 🙈
On the way to Taupo, we stopped at a waterfall, but of course it started raining just as we arrived 😅 so we quickly stopped, took a photo, and continued 🙈
In Taupo itself, we arrived around 1pm. We went to a dam that opens daily at 2pm as a tourist attraction. Then we went to a famous waterfall in Taupo called Huka Falls.
It wasn't that spectacular, just a waterfall 😅
After that, we visited a geothermal park. It was super cool 😍 For an $8 entrance fee, we could see steam coming out from many places. It was definitely worth it. The #LoveTaupo sign by the lake is also worth a visit.
In the evening, Taupo is a great place to go out and have fun. However, we drove to our camp spot and watched a movie before going to bed. The next day, we took a sailing tour to the famous Maori rock carving. Before the tour began, we sat in the hot thermal spring by the lake. The water was so hot in some places that it burned our skin. But then we headed to the harbor. The tour was really worth it. On the boat, we were served hot chocolate and given a postcard as a souvenir. After the tour, we found a nice spot where we could watch the sunset for dinner.
All in all, a weekend is enough to see Taupo. 🌋
