We drove south along the coast by car. On the way, we enjoyed the Halona Blowing Hole as well as the magnificent views from some lookouts. However, we couldn't reach Lanikai Beach as parking was prohibited throughout the village. Instead, we managed to find a parking spot at Kailua Beach Park. It was indescribably beautiful there - white sand and light green water. After 3 1/2 hours, we wanted to explore a peninsula. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a US Marines Corps base. At the checkpoint, a guard waved us over and explained that it was a military base. He took Thomas's driver's license and asked us to turn around, and then he would return the license. Unfortunately, Thomas misunderstood and didn't turn around immediately, but continued along the road into the base. We even drove past a McDonald's restaurant in the base. After about 1 km, we were stopped by a military patrol. Thomas, as the driver, was asked to step out of the vehicle, raise his hands, turn away from the officer, and walk backwards towards him. Then he was searched for weapons before being allowed to answer questions. After taking the information of all occupants, we were escorted out of the base. It was an exciting experience. Conclusion: We were warned and are never allowed to enter a military base without permission again. If we do it again, we can be imprisoned for up to 6 months or receive a $500 fine or both. What would have happened if we had stopped at the McDonald's and ordered a burger? :) We spent our last evening where we had been every evening before.
