Saturday 5.8. Furøy - Saltstraumen

Cloudy and rainy on and off, it clears up a bit in the evening!

We pack the car calmly and leave just before ten, initially on yesterday's route, to the glacier. There follows a phase of many tunnels, the longest, right at the beginning, is 7.6 km long.

We also find the most beautiful toilet house in Norway, which Gerds brother has reported about.

Today we don't have a long distance to travel, it's 147 km, so we look for a cafe to not arrive too early at our next campsite. We find the Polar Spot Center, where we get delicious coffee and equally delicious waffles.

Still, we arrive at the campsite before 1:00 p.m., but we can soon move into our cabin - once again without a toilet and shower. After an extended break, we cross the long bridge over the Saltstraumen on foot in the afternoon. This is the strongest tidal current in the world - approximately every 6 hours, about 400 million cubic meters of water flow through a shallow, only 150 m wide passage between two islands, at speeds of up to 40 km/h. This creates huge whirlpools and a total turmoil in the water.

Some people have gathered to watch the tidal change. There are boats on the water, some anglers, and large inflatable boats filled with tourists taking photos, racing through the wild current with their engines running.

The spectacle of the wild swirling and flowing water fascinates us, we endure for just under an hour, then it gets cold and we return to the campsite.
