Langkawi 🏝

Нашр шудааст: 07.03.2019

Hello dear ones,

Now I'm already at my second stop of the trip. The time in Singapore went by very quickly and I've been on the road for a week already.

On Tuesday afternoon, I arrive in Langkawi. It's very hot but also a bit windy, so it's bearable. The first positive surprise is that my taxi to the accommodation is driven by a woman. She is very nice and tells me a lot about the island.

My accommodation is small and only has 2 dormitories. There isn't much going on on the island at the moment and I only share the 4-bed dormitory with one other person.

Two beautiful beaches are only 5 minutes' walk away. There are few tourists here, but there are many construction workers tinkering with one of the many new hotels.

At the beach, I rent a sun lounger with an umbrella (1€) and enjoy the beautiful view. When I'm in the water, the employee from the rental on a jetski asks, "Do you want to make a tour?" 😳 I quickly consider (of course also wondering if this could be a trap, Mom) and finally climb onto the jetski. And it was definitely worth it. The jetski guy has to bring a screwdriver to his colleague and therefore drives (quite fast by the way) to one of the three neighboring islands. The islands are uninhabited; only a few tourist trips lead there for a leisurely stay. The scenery is just awesome! On the way back, he lets me drive too and later says, "Mary, you have to improve your driving skills!" 😄

At the beach, I met a German guy and later we went together to a beach cocktail bar. The sun sets and the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. "Dirk" is very nice and for a change, I find it relaxing to speak German... For the next day, he wants to do an island hopping tour and I spontaneously decide to join him.

So the next morning, we take a shuttle to the boat pier, where many boats do the island hopping tour.

The small islands in the sea are really beautiful to look at and I really like the tour.

However, what's really shocking is the many spots in the water where trash floats. I don't know if I've never noticed it before or if I've never gone so far out to sea. I have now seen everything that was shown in the documentary "A Plastic Ocean". It has a depressing effect when you admire the great nature and then see cola bottles floating in the sea... And when the Indian woman in front of me throws her takeaway plastic cup into the sea like in a trash can, I'm in a state of horror... That was really shocking. Now I'm even more curious about what kind of trash awaits me when diving in just over a week.

Aside from that, it's quite relaxed here. I try out the different beach bars and sometimes enjoy the air-conditioned Starbucks in the afternoon.

In the long run, the heat, and especially the intense sun, is unbearable.

I get my first severe sunburn on my feet, which is more painful than expected 😢

For tomorrow, my last day, I will borrow a scooter from the hostel to get to the viewpoint "Langkawi Sky Bridge". In Malaysia, there is left-hand traffic, so I'm a bit skeptical about how I will manage. But the streets here are not crowded, and we even survived the Indian scooter ride 😅

On Saturday, I will continue to Georgetown via ferry. There, I will finally sleep in a hotel (4 stars 😏). I can hardly wait for a comfortable bed and a private bathroom after 8 hostel nights.

That's all from me for now.

Greetings from the sun ☀️

Goodbye Müsli & until next time!

Your Mary
