Today we started early, heading towards the Dambulla Cave Temple.
On the way there, we first stopped at a wood workshop to learn about what can be made with skillful craftsmanship from local woods and natural colors: chairs, tables, animals, masks, toys, and much more. The natural colors are obtained by dissolving wood shavings from the local rainbow tree in water, which then changes color by adding different materials, such as metal. It's a bit like magic. Really exciting.
On the way, we also saw a Hindu temple, beautifully adorned with small artworks.
The next stop was a herbal garden. Ayurveda is practiced here and we learned about the native herbs that can help with different ailments.
After that, we continued to the Dambulla Cave Temple. Here, we can see Buddha statues from before Christ to the last century. We also had the opportunity to offer a lotus flower with wishes for our next life. However, we had to defend it against countless mischievous monkeys.
We will be staying at the Sigeriana Resort Hotel in Dambulla for the next two nights.
