San Sebastián: lots of rain and a dent

It's been a while since our last post. What have we experienced during this time?! We continued driving along the French coast and originally planned to stay overnight in France. But we got stuck in traffic towards Bordeaux, so we decided to drive to San Sebastián and stay there for 2 nights since the day was already ruined. And so we did. We had already booked an overnight stay there, but it was for the next day.

 As we approached our destination, it got darker and colder, and we started going uphill. At times, I felt like the camper was driving backwards while I tried to drive up the hill ☺️. We were able to spend one night in an extra parking space with many others, almost side by side. The sky got darker and then it started raining for hours. We used the day to relax, and in the evening, we went to a restaurant to end the day.

It poured half of the night, and sleeping with four people in the camper was quite a challenge. One person snored all night, another tossed and turned loudly, the third couldn't sleep at bedtime, and the fourth didn't notice any of it and slept peacefully. The next afternoon, we were able to move to our pitch. It was still raining quite a bit, and the pitch was tiny and completely soaked, so it was clear that we couldn't set up the tent again today 😞.

Steffi wanted to explore the city a bit. The rain radar on her phone showed no more rain from 1 p.m. Elisa also wanted to come along, but the rest couldn't or didn't want to.

The bus stop was right next to the campsite, so we wanted to take an old cable car and get an overview of the city from above. There was also a retro amusement park at the top that Elisa wanted to try out. As soon as we arrived and enjoyed the amazing view, it started raining again, really heavily. We quickly took shelter in the bumper cars and waited for at least 20 minutes until it was only drizzling (hey, we're from Hamburg and used to a bit of rain, it doesn't bother us). Eventually, we took the cable car back down and took the bus to the city to do some shopping. Me, Steffi, known for my shopping passion 🤪, still found it annoying that all the shops were closed. It was apparently a holiday... So we checked out the really beautiful beach promenade, including the beach itself. Eventually, the sky became very dark, and we quickly took the bus back up to the mountains and back to the campsite.

The next morning, we drove out of the very tight pitch, and as Steffi was turning left, she didn't see or underestimated the wall, there was a loud bang, and we got stuck on the wall. A brief tirade of swearing from the driver and co-driver, and Cindy quickly jumped out of the car to assess the damage. We only heard words like "you have to go here, further, no, here". Very helpful as a driver. Where the hell is "here"? After a short time, the car was free again, and I took a look at the damage. There is definitely a big dent, but the camper is still drivable. Oh well, the insurance will take care of it eventually when we're back...

After a short visit to the football stadium of San Sebastian (Steffi has decided to visit all the stadiums along our way), we continued our journey with the goal of Bilbao. We wanted to see a giant spider in front of the futuristic Guggenheim Museum (but it didn't want to see us, as there was no parking available for miles). After that, we continued driving along the beautiful Atlantic coast until Santander, with the goal of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean...

Summary of San Sebastián: beautiful small city with a stunning beach promenade, campsite with pitches that are way too small and walls that get in the way and annoy.

Update on the extension cord: Steffi has repaired it to some extent, we can use it again and it can be rolled in and out 😃 You can ask me anytime or book me for repairing chemical toilets 🚽😜😀 I have become an expert in that as well (unintentionally).
