The area around Cangzhou is one of the four largest raw salt production sites in China. In addition to the previously mentioned steel and iron industry, which hosts one of the three largest foundry production sites in China, and the significant glass industry, other key industries include petrochemicals, electrical appliance manufacturing, the automotive industry, and food processing. Furthermore, Cangzhou is one of the largest PVC production sites in China.
But who would have thought that I was practically sitting on oil in China? It was only through the horse-head pumps (deep pumps) in the fields around Cangzhou that I became aware of this fact. The Dagang Oil Field (大港) and the Shengli Oil Field (胜利) are located in the region, and the precious black gold is being diligently extracted. There is already a long tradition of oil production in the area, as the Shengli Oil Field was discovered in 1961 and the Dadang Oil Field in 1964. What many may not realize is that China is the fifth largest oil producer in the world, following the USA, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Canada, extracting about 8% of the global total.
