The drive from Dagali to Rjukan is already scenically attractive. The old Krosso cable car, which was completed in 1928, is still essentially in its original condition, only the ticket machine with touch display and credit card software is from the 21st century.
On the plateau there are now numerous weekend cottages or ski huts, hytter, in World War II the area was strategically important. Heavy water was produced in the valley, which the Germans wanted to use to build an atomic bomb. However, in February 1943 the Norwegians sabotaged the project and blew up the facility.
The summit of Piggnatten is just a minor elevation on the plateau, but the view is magnificent. Surprisingly, despite the cable car, we are the only ones here, only a few Dutch people are at the Kanonstillinga, the information board at the old cannons' stand.
For the ride down with the cable car, you have to ring the bell, then the only cable car employee working today will come up.
