Tag 2.3: Hartland Quay - Morwenstow

Imechapishwa: 23.06.2019

The original stage from Hartland Quay to Bude is indicated in my hiking guide as the most strenuous of the entire Coast Path, so I heeded the advice to split it and divided it into two sections. Nevertheless, we approached the day with great respect, especially since we were actually very exhausted from the previous days. Today was also the 24-hour Tsunami Race, in which runners from different starting points RACE to Bude...

At first it was calm as usual, but suddenly the horde passed us. Individuals occasionally followed, so I started asking them where they had started. At first it was said: Hartland Quay, but then Clovelly, then Westward Ho! and there were actually some who had run overnight from Bude to Westward Ho! and were now on their way back to Bude!!!! HOW CAN ONE SURVIVE SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!?! Un-fucking-believable! We hike a path in 4 days and they run double that in 24 hours....

Well, at some point we agreed that they must simply be machines... ;-)

At the height of Elmscott, Crystal suddenly fell. After a little shock on both sides, we can now laugh about it, since nothing happened to her. But in the first moment, we were both very quiet...

Welcome Mouth was a very steep little valley, it looks so idyllic in the pictures... :-P

In the next valley Marsland Mouth, we crossed the border from Devon to Cornwall.

The heat or rather the sun, which burns relentlessly on the burnt skin, was also a big topic of the day. The constant question was: Melt under the hat or be consumed by the sun... ?!?!

After Marsland Valley, we met an older English couple who were heading to Morwenstow inland and joined them, as according to their statement, the route is less steep. So we walked past some old farms including Rectory Farm, which is now a hotel/restaurant, as well as the old church of Morwenstow.

Our accommodation for the night was a quaint pub with B&B, the Bush Inn. As always, the first beer was INCREDIBLY GREAT. :-)
