The 2nd week in Latin America

Imechapishwa: 01.10.2019

Contrary to expectations, the settling-in period went by quickly and we had already adapted to the Peruvians by the end of the first week. Outwardly, of course, we were still the Germans with skin like 'pollo', which means chicken. A joke the Peruvians made with Germans, as we have much fairer skin compared to them. But my wonderful and extremely funny mom topped it all off. When I told her about the 'pollo' skin, she simply said, 'Ah, that's why they call you Chica/Chico!'. Interesting theory, I must say, and supposedly I'm the one with the vivid imagination.

Back to the topic. You could say that not much has changed in the routine of the week. I went to school and diligently learned Spanish. Afterwards, we all went to the Mercado together, a market around the corner from the school with many small mini-kitchens. The food there was always delicious and fresh, but the best part was the juice lady. 1 liter of freshly squeezed juice for €1.20 and a nice conversation on top of that. Pure luxury.

The highlights of this week were definitely culinary. On Sunday, we spontaneously went to an organic food restaurant, which there are plenty of here, even though the Peruvians love meat. It was quite expensive, but definitely worth it. My 'Sandwich de el Pollo' was not only amazingly delicious, but also visually stunning. Plus, you could eat flowers, which is really cool.

The week was filled with food, because eating is the Peruvians' hobby. So on Wednesday, we went to a fancy restaurant to bid farewell to two roommates. If this continued, I might be able to roll back home soon. It was another very fancy restaurant, where the food was naturally delicious as well. But the evening wasn't over yet, because now we went to a bar. Let's be honest, of course we consumed alcohol. As Franka would say, 'Maybe we were a little buzzed afterwards!'. You can probably guess what that means, if not, just Google it. There were lots of games in the bar, so in the end, we played Uno with about 7 people. Well, when we were all in a good mood, we went to Mama Africa. We danced until 3:00 in the morning and the bouncer kindly paid for my drinks, which I shared with the others. We took a taxi home with the musical accompaniment of Roland Kaiser.

On Thursday, there was another very interesting culinary experience. In school, there was a cooking class on Thursday evening, traditional Peruvian cuisine. Well, with my twisted talents and good genes, I surprised the chef by tossing the ingredients in the pan like a pro. Everything over a giant fire, causing the pan itself to catch fire. Like a professional chef, I prepared the food for our group.
Well, it was definitely a very culinary valuable week.
