Das deutsche Nationaltheater

Publicerad: 08.03.2018

We have arrived at the German National Theater on our tour. However, we couldn't find the entrance or an open door. Maybe they specifically closed the doors for us, after all, we are very naughty, aren't we :( ? Since the theater staff or whoever was inside wouldn't let us in, we sat down in the square in front of it. Although we didn't get any impressions of the interior of the theater, we had a good overview of the building and its architecture. To get back to our familiar work Faust, we learned that there were some concerns and issues with the performance. One problem was that Goethe wrote against all the customs of the time. The work would have had to be shortened because otherwise the performance would be too long, and who wants to sit in the theater for two days and concentrate? Also, by rewriting the scenes, the true work became more and more distorted in terms of humor and intellectual content. However, this rewriting and rewriting would have been necessary in order to present Faust as a play to the audience. Because Faust contains some morally offensive scenes that would have caused too much uproar. Walpurgis Night is the perfect example of this. It could not have been performed without cuts, out of consideration for the audience. Sacrificing these scenes would have cost too much of the original book. Mass scenes were also very problematic due to the number of actors. Our idea to solve these problems includes summarizing the main message. Nevertheless, the main characters of the book should still play a part to avoid misunderstandings in the course of events. The biggest problem was that Goethe violated the values of the people of that time. We would solve this difficulty with a narrator. The narrator would read all the scenes that were too challenging or offensive for stage representation. It is a good compromise for the audience, as they will not perceive all the influences of visuals and sound, but only the narrator and the literature.

We are already in bed, but we still want to finish writing this update. It is now done and we will report to you tomorrow about our last day. You will also read something about the Buchenwald concentration camp.

Good night, see you tomorrow :).
