On Sunday, April 29th, Tim and I took the metro towards Wall Street after breakfast. We got off at Rector Street and were in the financial center. It was really gigantic and impressive. One skyscraper higher than the other. I wonder where all the people who work there live :D
We also passed the new One World Trade Center. And of course, the memorial of the old World Trade Center. It was pretty intense. They simply converted the huge footprint of the building into a waterfall leading into the ground. All the names were on the edge, and one had a white rose, which means that person would have had a birthday today. That didn't go completely unnoticed by me.
Then we continued walking and eventually arrived at THE Wall Street. Unfortunately, it was Sunday and therefore not bustling at all. But it was still cool. We had a bagel there. Tim had cream cheese and I had apple, and I had vanilla latte with it. How cool! :D
After that, we wanted to go to the Grand Central Station. Unfortunately, the train didn't stop at that station, and neither did the next one, which meant that we ended up on the other side of the Central Park, in Harlem in Upper Manhattan :D Great... But that's no problem in New York, because it feels like there's Wi-Fi growing on every tree, so we quickly informed ourselves about the neighborhood. It's known for its African American roots, and you could definitely notice that!
There were cool shops and African music playing, and you could get your hair braided at the barber. It's not completely safe there either, but it was interesting to see! We then walked to the Apollo Theater, where only white people were allowed in until the 20s, but luckily that's different today!
Then we went to a cool café where a birthday was being celebrated, and afterwards we went to the upper part of Central Park.
The weather was fantastic and we found a really beautiful spot and sat down on a bench to enjoy the sun. Wonderful. I could really get used to strolling through Central Park every day...
At around 4:30 PM, we headed back and went to our first group meeting. There are a total of 12 of us and 2 team leaders. There are 2 German girls and the rest are from New Zealand, Ireland, England, and the USA. But everyone is nice and we went to eat together afterwards.
We went to a barbecue place. It was extraordinary but super duper delicious! I had pulled pork with chips (we thought they were french fries :D) and coleslaw and cola.
Then we walked back and went to bed.
