Rustaq - Wadi Bani Awf – Pass Sharaf al Alamein -Al Hamra – Misfaht Al Abreyyn

Today we cross the familiar Batinah plain for the last time. At the beginning of the mountains, we make a short stop in Rustaq - the famous clay fortress has been closed for maintenance for some time, so we can only see it from the outside.

Soon after Rustaq, we head south from Highway 13 into Wadi Bani Awf - at first on asphalt and concrete, but soon one of the highlights of our Oman trip begins (at least for Gerhard): the off-road ascent from Wadi Bani Awf past "Snake Canyon" up to the 2100 m high Pass "Sharaf El Alamein" - an absolute must in Oman for the off-road fan, with a few "hairy sections" and great views of the landscape.

From the pass it gets easy - the road is good and paved... In many bends and curves, it goes down 1500 meters in about 20 km of driving distance to Al Hamra in the Ad Dakhiliyah region. Then we go up again to the most famous village in Oman: Misfaht Al Abreyyn. You will learn more about our stay there in the next blog.

After a short stop in Rustaq - the famous clay fortress is again closed for maintenance for quite a long time - we start the ascent to the pass Sharaf El Alamein (2100 m a.s.l.) via Wadi Bani Awf. This is a famous Off-Road tour in Oman and definitely a highlight for Gerhard. From the pass the road is paved and steep - within 20 km driving you get down 1500 m into the Ad Dakhiliyah Region. Our next stop is Misfaht Al Abreyyn - the most famous historical village in Oman. More about our stay there in the following blog.
