Jostedal and its glaciers

Објављено: 24.06.2023

Quick coffee in the unlovely car park of the ski resort and off we go, we're looking for a nicer place for breakfast. Quick shopping in Gaupne and that's where we discovered such a store for the first time, a Vinmonopolet. This store sells beverages with an alcohol content of more than 4.75% by volume. It is a state-owned company and is supervised by the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. That also explains why you can't buy wine in any supermarket. The opening hours of these 331 branches spread across the country are restricted, this one only opened at 10:00, we were too early. But we will definitely visit such a store, of course out of curiosity...!

When we drove into Jostedal, we immediately found a nice breakfast spot on the road. During breakfast, there were also racing cyclists passing by, so I had to continue by bike as well. The road winds leisurely along the valley, occasionally there are tunnels, luckily they are a bit lit. Of course, I had lights on my bike, but it's still a bit eerie to ride into a completely unlit tunnel.

From the campsite, I was allowed to explore the area a bit more, from here all roads lead uphill and also to different branches of the Jostedal glacier, great. This glacier covers 2/5 of the entire national park, is 487 km² in size, and is the largest glacier on the European mainland.

Quickly down and together with Della by bike towards the glacier at Bergsetbreen. The road ends after 5 km, then we walked another good 3 km through a breathtaking landscape, flanked by another glacier arm. After a delicious picnic, we went back to the bikes and with them, we were allowed to zoom back down into the valley.

After so much activity, the poor guy finally got some decent meat again, we had earned the delicious pork fillet from the grill.
