Today we should get even closer to the glacier, to Nigardsbreen. Actually quite early, but that doesn't work out so well yet. The scrambled eggs with bacon were fantastic though, especially in such a beautiful environment.
Packed our backpacks and off we went with the bikes again. Arrived at the parking lot, a boat trip over the first 1.5 km was offered, sounds good, let's do it. On the boat, you could clearly feel the cold of the lake, and there were some ice floes floating around. In contrast to yesterday, there were a few more adventurous people on the way, which could also be due to the fantastic weather or the day of the week.
We hiked up to the glacier over the stone world that was once covered by the glacier. Every now and then, you could catch a glimpse of the glacier river, in which you could see the ice blocks floating. When crossing the river, we discovered whole sections of the river full of ice floes, unbelievable. In contrast, there were obviously protected areas in between, where the fauna had already spread and yellow flowers occasionally shone in the middle of this stone world.
A glacier from up close is quite an impressive sight. There was a cool wind blowing and signs warned that ice blocks can break off at regular intervals, which can in turn hinder the water drainage and thus cause floods. Another mighty force of nature.
Like all glaciers, Nigardsbreen was also much larger 100 years ago. So the whole lake we see today used to be covered with eternal ice.
As a reward, we enjoyed some ice cream, before trying the Fiskeburger after the Fiskekaker. Bon appétit!
