Food and Drink

We have already described the peculiarities of the currencies of Cambodia and Laos.

In this section, we want to briefly discuss costs and prices.

Generally, the prices for food and drink in Laos, as well as bus rides, appear to be slightly higher than in Cambodia. We also have the impression that Cambodia has a slightly better price-performance ratio when it comes to hotels. However, this is our subjective impression and not the result of a comparative statistical survey.

Below are some information about our most important everyday needs:

1.5 liters of water cost approximately 45 Euro cents in Cambodia, and approximately 50 Euro cents in Laos.

0.3 liters of beer costs 45 to 75 Euro cents during happy hour in Cambodia. We have hardly found this kind of special offer in Laos. The normal price for a 630 ml bottle of 'beerlao' fluctuates between 1.05€ (10,000 kip) and 1.60€ (15,000 kip).

A soft drink costs between 0.60€ and 0.75€.

A fruit shake is available for 0.90€ to 1.50€.

For dinner, if it's not a burger, pizza, or pasta, but specific to the country, we have paid between 7 and 12€ for the two of us, including drinks!

Everything is really very cheap and usually very good.
