Day 1 in New York (10/04/2016)

Publikuar: 07.10.2016

After arriving at JFK in New York, we had to go through passport control and had to be patient to get through it (1 hour wait time). Anyway, we then took the Air Train from the airport to the Howard Beach station on the A subway line. Here, you pay $5 for the Air Train ride and your first metro ticket. We decided to get a 7-day MetroCard for $31 per person (only buy MetroCards from the official dealer, not from people on the platform) that allows us to ride as much as we want. The subway ride to Manhattan is already the first experience and gives us a first impression of the city.

We have to walk from the subway station to our Airbnb and then meet one of our hosts, Gustavo. He already gives us the first information and takes care of us from the beginning. In the evening, we take a walk around the city and absorb the first impressions. First, we go from 10th Street to 11th Street and treat ourselves to the first real American burger at Gotham West Market. Once we have filled our stomachs, we head towards the Hudson River to see the huge aircraft carrier of the Marines.

Afterwards, we go from the aircraft carrier towards the east and eventually arrive at Times Square, or rather, we are already blinded by the neon signs a block earlier. It's really impressive how many neon signs can be attached to one building and at the same time how many people are still out and about in Manhattan at 10 pm. We leave Times Square behind and head towards Rockefeller Center, as our eyes need a break from the insanely bright neon signs. When we arrive at Rockefeller Center, we enjoy the relative peace and take in the courtyard, where the ice rink is already being prepared for 10/08.

Since we are too lazy to walk back, we take the subway and return to our accommodation, where we also get to know Stephen, our second host. He is also very nice to us and gives us even more tips, but in our state - being awake for 22 hours - we can hardly process them anymore. We retreat and go to sleep.
