We have been with our new hosts, Krista and Craig, not far from Barcelona, in the middle of nowhere, for 2 weeks now. Surrounding us are nothing but rocks, pine trees, and blooming almond trees. We have to drive off-road for about 15 minutes to reach them. Life there is very simple. No internet connection, no refrigerator or washing machine, and water usage is limited. We have our own eco-lodge made of stone and wood, with a stove, not far from their wooden cabin. They are around our age, super nice and relaxed, and it feels more like visiting friends. Their goal is to run a yoga retreat there someday, and Krista has already given us some great yoga classes.
During the week, we only work 2-3 hours a day. We take care of ourselves and take turns cooking with them in the evenings. After dinner, we usually play something together or watch a movie. Our work mainly consists of gardening tasks such as weeding, composting, digging, collecting and sawing firewood, etc. We also have a bigger project where we build stone beds and paths and fill them with soil. It's hard work, but it's fun and we learn something along the way :) These stone beds look great, and we collect the materials (stones and soil) from the surrounding area - completely free. Their dogs Marley and Coco get along great with ours, and since there is nothing and no one around, Alma and Naomi can roam and play freely all the time. But when we work, they are always near us to help with digging or inaugurate the fresh beds with a nap. We will stay for about another week and then slowly make our way back home through Italy.
