North Island / Day 7-9

Publikuar: 04.09.2019

Hello dear ones, not much has happened in the last few days. As if the Green Turtles know that it is now September and their season is over, we haven't seen any traces on the beach for three days. Maybe the Green Turtle on Sunday was the last of the season. I don't know.

In September, the season for Hawksbill Turtles also starts, but probably not until the end of September. However, since I am already leaving the island on September 21st, I might not have the luck to see any Hawksbill Turtles. There should still be a few nests hatching in the next few weeks, so hopefully I will still see some baby turtles here.

But what we have in abundance on the beaches is washed-up garbage. It's really insane. In the last three days alone, we have collected a total of 4.5 kg of garbage on the beaches. It may not sound like much, but you have to consider that the majority is plastic and Styrofoam, which weighs almost nothing. However, the Seychelles are still considered a country with relatively little garbage in the sea. I don't want to imagine what it looks like elsewhere. People who know me know that I hate seeing litter on the street or in the park and I usually throw it away. But here it hurts even more because I know that the garbage comes from the sea and a large part of it stays there, destroying the ecosystem, the fish, and the turtles. I hope that humanity will wake up soon and stop polluting the environment and the world's oceans.

We also have a new "pet" now. One of the Giant Tortoises has been particularly thirsty lately and can smell the water from the tap in front of our house. He is quite shy, but when we give him water, he becomes a little more trusting. We have now given him a name: Mart (which is made up of the initial letters of our first names: Manu, Alex, Romy, and Tanja).

The Moorhens running around here are quite funny. They always pick fights with other Moorhens and chase each other. It looks really funny. Since they can't fly, they run after each other with fluttering wings. It looks like something out of a bad comic strip. :)

This morning we had a bit of sunrise at East Beach. I hope in the next few days I will see a real sunrise that is not blocked by clouds.

By the way, the food here is not that great. There is a lot of meat and fish, and for me, it's usually just rice with mashed lentils. This morning for breakfast, I had fried potato wedges and peanut butter toast. Maybe my stomach is not used to this greasy food anymore because I suddenly felt really sick in the morning. Luckily, it's better now, but just to be safe, I skipped lunch.

See you soon, my dears

Yours, Alex

😂 nein. Der Eimer ist zum Glück leer!
