Day 71 Otago Peninsula

Rakabudiswa: 16.01.2019

We treated ourselves to a day off from the 'hustle and bustle' of the city on the Otago Peninsula in front of Dunedin's port. After a brief stop at dilapidated fortifications from World War II, we drove to Sandfly Bay, which lived up to its name (fortunately not because of the biting insects, but because of the sand swirling in the wind). We strolled between dunes and the sea, a wonderful place where sea lions and seals frolicked. Afterwards, we explored the ruin of an old limestone kiln against the picturesque backdrop of green hills and sandstone cliffs. We discovered a small treasure chest that turned out to be a geocaching point. And to top it all off, we visited the Royal Albatross Center at Taiaroa Head - the only mainland colony of these birds - where we not only saw nesting parents but also witnessed an impressive flight show by competing teenagers (thanks to perfect weather conditions - the albatrosses need a lot of wind to fly).
