Day 5: Build shelter

Rakabudiswa: 15.05.2018

Despite returning relatively late last night, the day began today just like the previous days:

The alarm clock rings at 5:45 am

Breakfast at 6:30 am

Departure at 7:00 am

Since we hadn't managed to hunt a water buffalo in the past few days, it was once again on our priority list today.

When we arrived at the waterhole, we narrowly missed three magnificent bulls with their herd and had to temporarily give up the search around noon. After lunch and a cup of coffee, we set off again. Same waterhole, but this time the hunter and the scout wanted to wait longer in ambush. After checking the wind direction and selecting the optimal spot, we started building a hunting stand. It consisted of dead, leafless branches as a frame, which we then covered with thorn bushes and fresh greenery for camouflage.

We were ready by 4:30 pm: while the hunter and the scout waited in the hideout, Wilhelm and I positioned ourselves in the background. Once again, it was a waiting game...

Since the spot where I was waiting was slightly elevated, I had a fantastic view of the savannah during sunset.

After waiting for almost 3 hours, finally... a shot. Shortly after, Scout Absalom gave us the signal to pick them up. They had actually managed to stalk and kill a magnificent waterbuck bull. As the sun had already set, we quickly loaded the buck and made our way back to the farm through the dusk. In the evening, we celebrated the success over another delicious dinner (gnu schnitzel and traditional African squashes).
