South African Road Trip I - Kaphalbinsel

Rakabudiswa: 19.01.2018

On Tuesday it was time to leave the hostel and hit the road. Mutti picked up her little roadrunner, a VW Polo, from the car rental and almost got in on the passenger side, as is often the case in left-hand drive. "Driver, to Hout Bay please!"
I'm already somewhat used to driving on the left side of the road from driving in New Zealand, but not yet used to manual transmission. It's not ideal when you instinctively reach for the gear stick on the right side. I have to say that the traffic in the Cape region is very relaxed. So I drove to Hout Bay without any stress and checked into the only backpacker in town. Just 10 meters from the beach.

It was also time to enjoy a bit of European cuisine again. Ciabatta with Pesto Tricolore. After two and a half months in Southeast Asia, it's just awesome. Then a long nap, because it's quiet in Hout Bay and you have a bit of trouble sleeping when the bass in Cape Town makes the walls shake until the early morning. And that relentless craving for decent coffee. So off for a walk on the beach in search of coffee. I was successful.

On Wednesday, after Julian arrived in Cape Town, we went to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Julian and I had decided to travel together for a while on my planned route.

It is definitely recommended to take the route via Chapman's Drive and drive along the coast at a leisurely pace.

Arriving at Cape Point, Mutti first enjoyed the breathtaking view from the lighthouse.

From there, a path leads to the Cape of Good Hope.

The Cape of Good Hope can also be reached by car. However, the parking lot below the cape looked relatively boring. So we drove straight to Cape Point and went for a hike.

On the way back, it's definitely worth driving through Simons Town to observe the penguins there. They return to the beach in the afternoon after hunting.

This excursion definitely requires a whole day.

In the evening, we had the best fish at the best fish restaurant in Hout Bay. It's probably the most expensive in town, but still very affordable for Europeans.

The next morning, we continued east to Hermanus.

In this sense: Let's go out into the countryside!

Have Fun and Be Proud!

Your Jan/Mutti
