Sometimes I feel the wanderlust - or should I say the “nearbywanderlust” ;). Often beautiful places are not even that far away. That's why last summer I decided to go to the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria with some friends. We wanted to spend a few days in nature, go swimming in the lake, go hiking (if the weather wasn't too hot), and just have a great time - and we definitely succeeded!
Our first stop was the Wolfgangsee. There are great hiking opportunities around the Wolfgangsee. There are many different routes of varying difficulty, and we chose two not-so-difficult hiking trails and the ascent was definitely worth it. One of the hikes went to the Schafberg and the effort was definitely worth it! The hike is not easy, about 1200 meters of altitude, but doable. Swimming in the Wolfgangsee afterwards was wonderful! We also came here on another day just for swimming. There are several nice public bathing areas around the lake. And for the adventurous, there is a spot where you can cliff jump.
At the Attersee, a hike to Schoberstein is recommended. The hike is not particularly challenging, but offers magnificent views of the landscape. With breaks, it took us about four hours. This tour can definitely also be done with children or less experienced hikers.
Since we set off relatively early, we could enjoy most of the day at the Attersee. We particularly liked the public bathing area in Attersee am Attersee. To round off the day, we had a great dinner at the Gasthaus Wachtberg.
To enjoy some cultural enrichment in between, we drove to Hallstatt for a day. Here we explored the charming village and visited the Salt Mines. The insights we gained in the salt mines were very exciting. The tour through the salt mines was a lot of fun! So if you ever find yourself in Hallstatt, don't miss the visit to the salt mine.
It is definitely worth staying in the Salzkammergut! There is still so much more to discover here - for example, the Traunsee. Among the lakes in the Salzkammergut, this is considered one of the coldest, but on warm summer days you can still enjoy the refreshing coolness.
So - we will definitely be back! And as I mentioned at the beginning, the most beautiful places are often not so far away!
