Acquaintances drew my attention to a dream destination: Lake Bled. I had never heard of Bled or Lake Bled before, but after a short research, it was decided - I had to go there!
So we set off for a long weekend - and what can I say, this short vacation did not disappoint!
To be honest, I didn't have Slovenia on my list of holiday destinations. However, the country has a lot to offer and in my opinion, it is an incredible insider tip as a travel destination in Europe. In addition to the capital city of Ljubljana, there are various regions in Slovenia. Slovenia even has a small portion of the coast - which will definitely be worth a visit in the future. We mainly stayed in the region around Lake Bled and took a day trip to Ljubljana.
The lake offers some great activities and you can easily spend a few days here. Our program included a boat ride to the island (an absolute must!), a visit to the castle, and a ride on the summer toboggan run. Bled is not only known for its island and castle, but also for its cream cakes. I recommend trying the cream cakes at least once! I fell in love with this cake and I must find a recipe to make it at home.
We also enjoyed the hike through the Vintgar Gorge. This "hike" is not exceptionally challenging, but it offers wonderful impressions in the middle of the gorge. Along the hike, you can discover the Bohinj Railway Bridge, which crosses the gorge.
The best view of Lake Bled, besides the view from the castle of course, can be seen from the viewpoint Ojstrica.
We visited this beautiful city for a day. The city is stunning and reminds me of a mix between the cities of Trieste and Vienna. We didn't book a city tour for the day trip, but simply let ourselves wander through the city center. Along the river, the many restaurants and bars exude a Mediterranean flair. To end the trip, we took a train up to the castle and then walked back to the city. One day is enough to see the city, if you want to get a rough impression.
Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake and therefore the water temperature can be quite refreshing. Nevertheless, after the hike to the waterfall, which leads through a beautiful forest, we cooled off in the lake and spent the rest of the day relaxing on the shore. On the way back to Bled, we drove through the national park and stopped at a viewpoint that offers a beautiful view of Lake Bohinj.
Yes, definitely! As you can probably tell by the article, I really enjoyed the trip to Slovenia. We discovered beautiful places, went hiking, and enjoyed our time. I would recommend a trip to this beautiful, rather unknown country to everyone - especially to the region around Lake Bled.
