Egypt 2016 - in the land of the Pharaohs

The land where the sun resides

The land where the sun resides...

Egypt 2016 started for us with a quite exhausting Condor flight. There wasn't even free water. Since then, we try to avoid Condor as much as possible. But that didn't harm the holiday at all.

Egypt is fascinating. Especially snorkeling is incredibly beautiful. We saw turtles, a thousand colorful fish, an octopus, and Jannik even discovered a small shark, which I unfortunately missed. Already during the approach to the landing, you could see dolphins jumping out of the airplane. It was simply unforgettable.

The most beautiful place we visited in Hurghada was the island where the pictures were taken. Our tour guide Peter, who accompanied us and our excursion group, called it the 'Caribbean island'. This designation definitely deserved it.

Actually, the highlight of the excursion should have been snorkeling. In the end, we found the reef in front of our hotel more beautiful than the reefs we visited with the group.

Initially, we wouldn't have thought that it would be the island that would impress us the most. But it was actually fantastically beautiful, the water turquoise and the sand snow-white. We had lunch there and enjoyed the view of the sea...

For some reason, the photographer who was on board had it in for us. He filmed and photographed us continuously and finally wanted to organize a photo shoot with both of us on the beach. We agreed and got some good pictures together (of course, we had to pay extra for the CD that contained pictures and videos... But it was worth it!)

However, you could tell that the photographer didn't really know what he was doing. He sometimes asked us to pose in ways that didn't look professional or good, but at least made us and our family laugh when we looked at the pictures later. So, it wasn't a big deal!

Cairo - pure chaos
Cairo - pure chaos

We decided relatively spontaneously to take a 2-day trip to Cairo for 140 euros because we really wanted to see the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. So, we sat in a relatively comfortable bus with a small group for five hours, but after a while, we felt sick. I couldn't even sit anymore 😂.

When we arrived in Cairo, we were absolutely surprised. It was insanely crowded, and the streets were a constant honking concert. A five-member family sat, however they managed it, together on a moped and waved at us friendly.

One thing that amazed me was the fact that the city's population has increased so rapidly in a short period of time that many people now live in the city's cemetery.

The buildings in the city seemed run-down and neglected, but that's because of all the desert sand that quickly damages even the facades of new buildings. Cairo is overwhelming, interesting, fascinating, but not aesthetic. But still, you should definitely see it!

We had food included on our trip. We were allowed to enjoy a delicious menu on a 5-star ship with our, by the way, very nice group. We could observe the Nile and process the first impressions while eating.
Cairo
Cairo's Old Town

We also visited Cairo's Old Town. I was glad I had thought of wearing long pants. The Old Town is different from the city center where our hotel was located. The people here are not so used to tourism. A crowd quickly formed around us, everyone wanted to take pictures with us. When we sat down to have a drink, a woman approached us. I didn't understand her, but she pointed to two small, smiling girls and gestured that she would like to take a picture with me and the two of them. I agreed. The girls wrapped their arms around me and smiled happily at the camera. With gestures and gestures, the woman made it clear to me how grateful she was. I remember that very well because it made me incredibly happy.

On the way, people turned around and stared at us. But it was by no means uncomfortable, it simply seemed interested. European faces seemed to be something unusual here.

The Old Town is definitely worth a visit and much more beautiful than the other corners of Cairo that we saw along the way.

By the way, we also went to the museum there. Actually, we're not the type of people who go to museums, but this one was really cool. Highly recommended!

The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx 🐪

There they were - the famous pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.

Actually, we thought that to get to this wonder of the world, we would have to drive deep into the desert.

Wrong.

We could already see the pyramids from our hotel, because Cairo has become so huge that it is not far from the pyramids anymore. Somehow, I find that sad because I always imagined that these mystical buildings would be lonely somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Around the pyramids, traders try to make a profit, and some Egyptians crowd your pictures and want money for it afterwards. Of course, we didn't let them take advantage of us. If you ever go there, don't let them cheat you.

For about 10€ we were allowed to enter the smallest pyramid. Actually, it wasn't really spectacular, but it was worth the 10€ to us. Not everyone can claim to have entered one of the pyramids! 😊 I am still super happy to have seen these famous buildings with my own eyes, from the inside and the outside.

All in all, the trip to Cairo was more than worth it! If you visit Egypt, an absolute must!
