Storm warning, city of “elders” superlatives and undead in the castle park

Objavljeno: 19.10.2023

We already suspected the evening before that this trip would not go completely as planned. We actually wanted to go on a vacation with lots of hikes and nature. After Lolland we wanted to explore Falster and then do a longer hike on Møn. In the evening, a lady from the motorhome that was parked next to us knocked on our window: She explained to us that the Danish news had issued a severe weather warning about violent storms and floods on the Baltic Sea.

So after a short stop in Falster we decided to escape to Zealand, where some distance between us and the coast further north would hopefully ensure calmer weather.

Nykøbing Falster

We canceled the hikes from our original plans for Falster, but made a short stop in the town of Nykøbing, the capital of Falster.

Kirkestræde Nykøbing Falster

The former trading town has some cute pedestrian zones with tiny houses around the market square, which radiated coziness even in the stormy weather.

We particularly noticed the decorations that had obviously already been set up for Halloween: zombies and skeletons emerged from front gardens and the market square was also decorated with pumpkins and artificial gravestones.

At our next stop it was also clear that Danes apparently like to decorate for Halloween: we encountered ghosts in the Gavnø castle garden and graves were also hinted at here.

Gavnø Castle Park

There was originally a castle here that was used as a nunnery until the Reformation. In the 18th century it was converted into a rococo palace.

Inside you can see some elegantly furnished rooms, a large collection of paintings and the castle chapel.

The park is also very beautifully landscaped. However, our walk there wasn't all that pleasant because of the stormy and rainy weather.

Very close to the castle is the town of Næstved, where the guide lured us with the promise of “The Oldest in Denmark” superlatives.

So we saw the oldest town hall and the oldest terraced houses in Denmark at Sct. Peder Kirkeplads.

The oldest guildhall, Kompagnihuset, is also in the city.

And here too, of course, the pumpkin decoration could not be missing from the cityscape.

Naestved

We ended our visit with a delicious hot chocolate and a cinnamon roll in the warm interior of a café.
