Yesterday we had enough of the cold and wind! We made our way to Jokkmokk, the Sámi capital. There was a nice campsite by a lake there. When we got there there was only one motorhome at the site and it was from… Austria! Specifically from St. Johann. We took a long walk along the frozen lake, and sure enough: the wind was almost gone and the sun pampered us with its rays. It was still -5°, but the lack of wind made this quite easy to bear. The lake is very spacious and the space is breathtaking!
In the evening we went to the sauna and then we met the Austrians, who turned out to be teachers on sabbatical, in the cozy lounge for a bottle of red wine. It was a very pleasant evening that lasted until after midnight.
This morning we woke up to very moderate temperatures and decided to go cross-country skiing. There is no real cross-country skiing track on the lake, but the snow is soft and you can do classic skiing quite well.
There are also a lot of snowmobile tracks on this lake. Here in Lapland, neither skiing nor cross-country skiing are the most popular sports, but snowmobiling (if you can call it a sport). At the weekend you can see cars driving around everywhere with large trailers in which the “athletes” transport their motorhomes. With them, men and women race like crazy across the snow-covered plains or simply alongside the road.
Another “popular sport” is the kick sled, which is mainly used by older to old people as a means of transport. We can borrow one at our campsite and try it out - it's really fun!
This is how you ride a kicksled: Mark the link and tap “Open link”.

To top off the day, we can enjoy our afternoon coffee outdoors for the first time here in the north - wonderful!
It even thaws a little!
This makes us confident for tomorrow! Because tomorrow we want to go on a reindeer sleigh ride. And yourself! Everyone gets their own sleigh with a reindeer. The tour will last 3 hours. Early in the morning we will go to the wilderness village of Solberget and get to know “our” reindeer there…
