Rottnest Island is a small island of about 19 sq km off the coast of Perth. We took a ferry from Fremantle to get there. The ferry, including bike rental, cost us $99 per person (and that was really the cheapest offer we could find). The island is known for its "Quokkas", which can be seen in the wild. These cute animals only live on this island, as they have no natural enemies there. Otherwise, you can only find Quokkas in zoos.
The island itself has beautiful beaches where you are often alone. Although a lot of tourists came to the island with our ferry, we were mostly alone at the viewpoints and beaches. The tourists seem to spread out well on the small island.
You can explore the island on foot, by bus or by bike. We chose the latter and would recommend it to everyone. There are 3 different bike routes, the longest of which (once around the whole island) takes about 4 hours. However, we decided to ride off the beaten path. You should always watch out for snakes, as they also live on the island.
All in all, we had a very nice day. You don't have to plan anything, just go for it - the island has beautiful corners to explore everywhere. And our absolute highlight were the Quokkas. These animals are really adorable. You can attract them with water and gently stroke them. Some of them are quite shy, others are very curious.
This time there is a small video to go with the photos from our day:
