Day 30 Killini - Agios Nikolaos

Objavljeno: 11.07.2019

Last night it was quite windy. I started to get restless, all the windows were open and they were rattling like crazy. Burki made some unintelligible noises. So I got up and closed them. I'd rather sweat than have broken windows. This morning we visited Loutra Killini, a former healing and bathing resort known for its healing mud mixed with sulfur. The mud is extracted from natural holes in the ground. It is mixed with leaves, maybe even frog ingredients, and it stinks like..... But Burki doesn't miss any therapy options and applies it all over his body. Then it dries and is rinsed off with sulfur-containing water after about 30 minutes. Don't think we went to Lidl together afterwards. He smelled sooooo bad. Then we drove to one of the never-ending sandy beaches. Here you can find the marked nests of sea turtles. The females bury their eggs on the beach at night and return to the sea. About half of the eggs hatch after about 50 days. The baby turtles then follow the horizon and the moonlight reflecting on the seawater. Only a portion of them survives as there are many obstacles on the beach that confuse the little turtles. There are still dangers in the water, so only one in about 1000 turtles will survive to adulthood. I find it fascinating that the females always come back to the place where they were born to lay their eggs. Nature, always magnificent. We're starting to feel pretty fried, especially Burki who feels like the Michelin Man in a sand coat. Poor guy.
