Gippsland Lakes (Australia Part 24)

Publikovaný: 20.11.2018

Our journey continued to the east. As we had to drive a good distance, we stopped briefly near Sale when we saw a sign with 'Boardwalk' and 'Lookout' on the side. The path then led us through a swamp area that we crossed on a boardwalk. The viewpoint was located by a lake and the whole landscape somehow reminded us of Germany...

To get some information about the Gippsland region, we stopped at the Tourist Information in Bairnsdale. Right next door was St. Mary's Church, praised by our guidebook for its ceiling paintings, which we also visited. It was really worth seeing - unlike most other houses in the city. We found some beautiful buildings during a short walk, but the city was not as beautiful as we had hoped.

After settling into our cottage in Lakes Entrance, we took a walk through the town, where there wasn't much to see except for a few of the many chips & fish shops - it seems that the sidewalks are rolled up around 5 pm... However, the path along the harbor still offered some nice views.

The next morning, we went to the hairdresser for a long overdue haircut for the gentlemen, while the ladies watched through the shop window with a cup of coffee. Freshly groomed, we then took a walk along the 90 Mile Beach.

In the afternoon, we went on a boat tour through the lakes around Lakes Entrance. We saw pelicans, black swans, and many cormorants.

We also saw some Australian fur seals (which interestingly enough are called South African fur seals in German...) frolicking in the water, but they did not really pose for the photo.

We discovered large kangaroos on one shore, which were taking a family outing to the water, but disappeared again when we approached them.
