Before booking Mexico, we did our research. Most hotels (in theory) were either in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum.
Due to price and recommendations from relatives, we chose Playa del Carmen. We were told it was 'less touristy' than Cancun.
We spent most of our time in Playa del Carmen but had planned to spend a day in Cancun.
So, after what felt like an eternity of walking to the bus station, we eventually got on one of the really comfortable ADO buses and took a 45-minute ride to Cancun for about €3.
Once there, we got a taxi to take us to the 'Hotel Zone' where most of the action was.
First impression: Beautiful blue water!! We really liked the beach. Personally, what I liked the most were the pelicans. We had them at our own beach, but they weren't as friendly. Here, they were not shy and would dive right next to the tourists while hunting. I wish I could show you the videos 🙏🏻☺️
But yes, it is true. The beach is lined with huge hotels and there is a different vibe compared to Playa del Carmen. However, the persistent vendors are the same everywhere.
At least the vendors in Mexico are friendly when you say no. We've had different experiences in Tunisia and Egypt 😅
We found some peaceful and beautiful spots by the sea where we could relax, even in Cancun. No hustle or stress. The beach in Playa del Carmen was much busier and livelier. It's not a bad thing, but it surprised us!
