Šibenik, a historic city on the Adriatic, is located in the heart of Dalmatia and is one of the oldest Croatian seaside cities.
At the beginning, I didn't know much about Šibenik, I just wanted to go on vacation without much preparation. Šibenik turned out to be the perfect choice. Even though I wasn't there long enough (is that even possible?), I saw a lot of the city and brought back many memories.
As soon as you arrive in the old town, you can see that the city has a lot of history. The oldest district is Dolac. I was sure - I made a good decision to come to this city. There I saw a poster that there would be concerts at Dolac. I ended up attending one of them. I was thrilled with the setting, the singers, the view... You just have to experience it for yourself! It was the most beautiful open-air event I have ever experienced.
After that, I wanted to visit the cathedral. Katedrala sv. Jakova, the Renaissance monument in Croatia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The 32-meter-high church is definitely worth a visit if you stay in Šibenik for a few days.
When I was tired from the city tour, I went to the beach Banj. It's just a few minutes from the cathedral through Dolac. There may be many people there sometimes, but the view of the cathedral and the old town is worth it. Especially if you visit at night.
Then it was time to eat. I visited one of the many Dalmatian taverns. I was lucky because there was live music that evening. I got to hear a real Croatian klapa. The atmosphere was so relaxed, everyone was singing along, or at least trying to, eating, and talking to each other as if they had known each other for a long time.
If you want to swim a little outside the city in the sea, you can also take a bus or car to Jadrija. I opted for a boat trip. During the trip, you can enjoy the view of the sea and Šibenik. And when I was close to the beach, I couldn't help but laugh. Colorful changing cabins, bowling, boats coming and going. I didn't expect that, but I was happy that it wasn't the usual beach. The water is warm, perfect for swimming and cooling off, and there's plenty of sun to recharge for the next few months away from the sea.
In addition to many churches, Šibenik also has four fortresses that you must not miss - Fortress Šubićevac, St. Mihovil, St. Nikola, and St. Ivan. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they also offer something for their visitors. The St. Mihovil Fortress has a summer stage for musical-theatrical performances, you can hike to the St. Nikola Fortress with a Nordic walking trainer, and the St. Ivan Fortress was the historical setting for scenes in the series Game of Thrones.
As you can see, I found out a lot about Šibenik during the time I was there. I went without any preparations. I didn't know what to see, where and what to eat, what activities were available... You can do it like me or take some tips and make the sightseeing tour easier. Then you will have more time to enjoy everything.
All in all, I am very happy that I traveled there. It is truly a city with history and offers a lot for young and old, musicians and theater fans, Croatians and tourists. One thing that surprised me is the rich offer of real estate in Croatia. I hope you will also see the beauty of Šibenik and enjoy it as much as I did. J
Best regards!
