Gertrude Saddle

Hey people,

you are back in another round of: "Britta admires... er, Britta travels the world!". This hike was once again both, because I admired the landscape and the view as I hiked the fjord. The track to Gertrude Saddle is not a particularly difficult track, but should not be hiked in bad weather (rain, too much rain the day before or when the temperature is below zero). The track runs over rock that has a few grooves here and there but has actually been flattened by the glaciers. This means that it is very slippery, especially where it is wet. There have been a few accidents on this track and I am not really surprised about some of the people we met on this track.

After I found Amelie at the campsite the day before, we decided to take advantage of the good weather after a rainy day and hike up the Getrude Saddle together. That was a nice change for the two of us hiking alone and we also joined forces in terms of the safety factor on this track. As long as the weather is dry, that's not necessarily necessary, as the track isn't that difficult when it's dry.

Let's go!

The track first runs into the valley before climbing steeply for about 600 meters.

When we got to the top we enjoyed the view with a small snack and the view was simply endlessly beautiful. In the background we could also see Milford Sound and how the boats kept going in and out. The view was simply fantastic!

View simply perfect!

We were really lucky with the weather and on the way back it became clearer that the weather was getting colder and winter was coming. So it's really time for me to head further north.

After the hike, we took a shower and then I persuaded Amelie to walk a section of the Keppler Track the next day and to end the day with me eating pizza. Since Amelie was driving, I invited her to have pizza and we drank a ginger beer with it. One thing I will definitely take back with me from this trip: ginger beer!

With that in mind: Cheers!
Your Britta
