Was, already half past four???

I wasn't exactly thrilled when the girls decided to watch the sunrise on Penang Hill in George Town on the last day. In retrospect, not a bad idea! :-)

We were all pretty tired when we stood at the bus station at quarter past five in the morning. However, we were not alone, there were many prostitutes, drunk partygoers, rats... around us. But we waited in vain for the bus. Fortunately, we then found a (most likely slightly intoxicated) taxi driver who took us to Penang Hill at an overpriced rate.

With a horde of photographers in tow, we took a small train up the mountain. It was completely quiet up here and it was beautiful to look at the slowly awakening city.

From Penang Hill, we then went to a Chinese temple complex. Before that, we had breakfast at a nearby market for the equivalent of €0.20. :-) However, some of the smells that hit you at the markets are really borderline (especially in the early morning).

In the evening, we strolled through the city one last time and looked at some of the wonderful street art. Afterwards, we started a small pub tour with a few people from the hostel. First, we went to a late-night shop recommended to us by a hostel staff member. It was located in a better garage. There were a lot of people sitting around the late-night shop on the street with small plastic chairs, talking and having fun. It was a great evening and we met many great people again!

The next day, we took the ferry to Langkawi Island. More on that in the next entry. :-)
