On June 1st, we began our adventure on the largest island in Hawaii with a wonderful drive on Highway No. 19. We drove from Hilo to Laupahoehoe along the coast (heading north).
1st Stop: Rainbow Falls
Our first stop at Rainbow Falls was only 5 minutes from our hotel Reeds Bay. Due to the lighting, the rainbow could only be seen near the waterfall, so we climbed close to the falls for some great photos...and there it was, a small but beautiful rainbow.
2nd Stop: Old Mamalahoa Hwy including Onomea Trail
As we cruised along the coast, we turned onto a historic road that brought us even closer to the water. We parked our car and walked on the Onomea Trail to the ocean. At the end of the trail was a beautiful clearing with small waterfalls that flowed directly into the sea.
3rd Stop: Akaka Falls
The next stop took us to Akaka Falls, which were located a bit inland. In the middle of the jungle, the water cascaded 135m into the depths.
4th Stop: Laupahoehoe Beach Park
This place was beautiful and sad at the same time, because in this bay, 24 people lost their lives in April 1946, when a tsunami swept away the former schoolhouse with 21 children.
On June 2nd, our journey continues towards the south!
