Tag 116: Welcome to Myanmar

After landing in Yangon, we just had to go through passport control to officially be in Myanmar. The passport control went smoothly without any problems, and since the plane was almost empty, we didn't have to wait long. Right at the airport, we got SIM cards for our phones and cash from the ATM. When we wanted to get into our taxi to the hostel, we noticed that the steering wheel was on the right side. We were completely confused when we realized that they drive on the right side of the road here. It later turned out that the cars are imported cheaply from Thailand and they are right-hand drive. When we arrived at the hostel, we ordered some lunch and started thinking about what we can do and where we can go in Myanmar. This took a while because there isn't much information available about Myanmar yet.

After we finished planning, we took a walk around the city. We visited a pagoda located in a roundabout. There, we were approached by a tour guide who explained some rituals for more luck and happiness. Then, we continued to a very busy street filled with food stalls and beer vendors. We tried the local beer and had some grasshoppers as a snack. We met three locals who work for a human rights organization here in Myanmar. We had very interesting conversations until late at night.
