Without Jeep through Costa Rica

प्रकाशित: 08.11.2017

A few kilometers outside of Monteverde, the road changed and suddenly we found ourselves on a heavily eroded steep gravel road, unable to move forward or backward. I must also mention that in Costa Rica there are only 3 paved highways and all other roads are often just dirt roads. We were certainly the attraction for the older people living there. Although we had not learned bad Spanish in school, we hardly understood these people and they did not speak English either. We communicated with gestures and they called a friend who was supposed to help us. However, this old Jeep couldn't pull us either, and since he himself couldn't drive up the mountain anymore, we continued down the bad road. Two weeks earlier, there were heavy tropical rains in Costa Rica, which is why the crossing over the river at the bottom of the mountain had been washed away. It was only filled with gravel, which we observed very often. But our car managed that too. On the other side, it went better until we couldn't go any further 200 meters before the main road. Our nerves were at an end and the mud increased even more as it started to rain. Eventually, 6 men and a newly looking Jeep managed to pull us back onto a safe road. Another Jeep and a small truck also got stuck trying to help us. We thanked our friendly helpers who didn't give up for over three hours and finally continued towards the Pacific. What an adventure, which luckily turned out well.
